big sur and the extraordinary patience of things

big sur and the extraordinary patience of things

For my birthday we spent a day in Big Sur, driving between various sites like Henry Miller’s library and McWay Falls, one of the few waterfalls that empty directly into the ocean. We lunched on a deck built amid redwood trees and skipped a hike that appeared more strenuous than any of us had worn appropriate shoes for.

Eventually we waited for the sunset at Pfeiffer Beach, a secluded spot sheltered partially by its lack of signage on Highway 1. The beach is streaked with purple sands and curves around the rocks. The section around the bend was mysteriously covered by a city of cairns. Stacks upon stacks, reaching back into a dry creek bed surrounded by cypress trees.
